Abstract

To achieve the goal of building an “AI-centered surveillance system”, this study focuses on the unique characteristics and challenges of the current GOP(General Outpost) surveillance systems. First, North Korea's threats, such as drones and trash balloons, require surveillance coverage across both ground and aerial domains. Second, the military’s operational constraints, including limited training data and unpredictable battlefield conditions, make it challenging to develop robust AI model in military domain. Third, the diverse operational environments of each unit prevent the uniform application of models trained in a single unit. To address these challenges, this study proposes an aerial object recognition methodology that integrates few-shot learning and federated learning. Few-shot learning algorithm allows for effective learning and inference from minimal data, making it well-suited to the data scarcity of aerial surveillance. We compared the generalization performance of our model to that of traditional supervised learning-based model. Federated learning, a form of decentralized machine learning, was used to simulate surveillance units with different operational environments as individual clients. It enabled consistent model performance across heterogeneous environments while preserving data privacy and reducing network load. The results showed that traditional supervised learning-based model struggled to infer unseen classes, while our model employing few-shot learning achieved a generalization performance of 49.86%. Furthermore, after implementing the federated learning system, the performance gap among clients was reduced by approximately 1.6 times, and network load decreased by 81%. The methodology proposed in this study aims to address the critical challenges currently facing defense AI models. By integrating few-shot learning and federated learning, it effectively tackles the issues of data scarcity and limited generalization while minimizing network load. This approach is expected to contribute to the development of a future platform for collecting and training military-specific datasets.
