비트겐슈타인은 자신의 문법적 탐구에서 일목요연한 묘사가 근본적 의미를 갖는다고 말한다. 비트겐슈타인에 의하면 철학적 문제는 언어적 오해에서 비롯되는데, 이는 우리의 문법에 일목요연성이 결여되어 있기 때문이다. 따라서 철학적 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 낱말들의 사용을 일목요연하게 봄으로써 언어의 사용을 올바로 이해해야 하는데, 이해는 다름 아닌 연관들을 보는 데 있으며 그런 까닭에 중간 고리들의 발견과 발명이 중요하다. 즉, 일목요연한 묘사란 중간 고리들을 발견 또는 발명함으로써 연관들을 보는 작업을 의미하며, 그럼으로써 ‘이미 우리 눈앞에 명백히 놓여 있는 것’을 이해하게 되고 그 결과 철학적 문제들이 사라지게 된다. 따라서 비트겐슈타인의 문법적 탐구는 언어를 수단으로 우리의 지성에 걸린 마법에 대한 투쟁이다. 가장 잘 알려진 비트겐슈타인의 문법적 탐구가 규칙 따르기 논의다. 그런데 그동안 규칙 따르기 논의는 일목요연한 묘사라는 관점에 따라 연구되지는 못했다. 이 글은 비트겐슈타인이 규칙 따르기 문제를 어떻게 일목요연하게 묘사하고 있는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 그럼으로써 규칙 따르기 논의에 대해 기존의 연구들이 주목하지 못했던 새로운 시각을 마련해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 먼저 의미에 대한 비트겐슈타인의 논의와 규칙 따르기 논의가 동일한 구조를 갖고 있다는 점을 밝히고, 규칙 따르기 논의를 일목요연한 묘사 개념에 따라 상세히 살펴보고자 한다. 규칙 따르기 논의의 핵심에는 규칙 따르기의 연관을 보기 위해 비트겐슈타인이 발명한 중간 고리들에 대한 탐구가 있으며, 그러한 중간 고리의 발명을 통해 비트겐슈타인이 본 규칙 따르기의 연관은 문법적 연관이었다는 점을 부각시킬 것이다.
Abstract
Wittgenstein says that the concept of a perspicuous representation has fundamental significance in his grammatical investigations. Philosophical problems stem from linguistic misunderstandings due to the fact that our grammar is lacking in perspicuity. In order to solve the philosophical problem, it is necessary to understand the use of language correctly by looking at the use of words perspicuously, and understanding is consists in seeing connections, hence the importance of finding and inventing intermediate. In other words, a perspicuous representation refers to the work of seeing connections by finding and inventing intermediate, so that we understand what is already in plain view, and as a result, philosophical problems disappear. Therefore, Wittgenstein’s grammatical investigations is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language. The most well-known of Wittgenstein’s grammatical investigations is the discussion of following rules. However, the discussion of following rules has not been studied according to the perspective of a perspicuous representation. This article attempts to examine Wittgenstein's discussion of following rules from the concept of a perspicuous representation. In doing so, I would like to prepare a new perspective on the discussion of following rules that previous studies have not paid attention to. To this end, this article first reveals that Wittgenstein's discussion of meaning and the discussion of following rules have the same structure, and second examines the discussion of following rules in detail according to the concept of a perspicuous representation. At the heart of the rule-following discussion is the exploration of the intermediate invented by Wittgenstein to see the connections of rule-following, and it will be highlighted that the connections of rule-following seen by Wittgenstein through the invention of such an intermediate was a grammatical connections.
