Abstract

The 68’ Movement was a ‘new cultural revolution’. It was not a ‘seize of power’ from above, but ‘everyday revolution’ from below. Therefore, 68's spirit and orientation contained room for women's/sexual liberation to subvert the sexual norms bound by the sexist gender dichotomy or bourgeois authoritarianism. In fact, 68 gave women multiple opportunities for activities not previously considered part of their roles. However, the overall axis and structure of the movement still did not deviate from the gender dichotomy. This is largely attributable to the fact that the gender division of labor in which men are the main actors of the movement and women are assistants worked even in the movement camp. Moreover, this gender division of labor improved the efficiency of the movement through the traditional role of women, from performing various daily tasks indispensable to the movement and to propagating the revolution with sexual images. The ‘sexual revolution’ of 68 also failed to transcend the gender hierarchy. It has the potential to play a kind of ‘emancipatory’ role, especially for women who were more oppressed by their double sexual morality. However, in reality, the ‘sexual revolution’ was more of a sexual objectification of men rather than a liberation that allowed women to acquire sexual identity. So it ended up as a ‘treachery of interest’ of the revolution, which led to the violation of women’s right to self-determination of their sexuality. In this way, the anti-authoritarian spirit of 68, which aims for a daily revolution, was not able to receive a plan to break through gender hierarchy and female subordination even within the movement due to the shackles of male hegemony. In the end, the unresolved contradictions and oppression within the 68‘ movement would explode into a new feminist movement.
