Abstract
This study investigates how advanced technologies shape business ecosystems and drive sustainable performance in an era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital transformation.. Through a case study analysis of diverse technology-based ecosystems, we confirm that competitive advantage is generated at the ecosystem level. Advanced technologies function as the core architecture for establishing and operating these ecosystems, with successful models often emerging as hybrid forms that amalgamate multiple technological types. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that sustainable performance in business ecosystems is determined by strategic role-sharing, technological moats, and mutual collaboration, as well as the capability to link these activities to the principles of sustainability. Leader firms act as ‘market creators’ that open new industry paradigms and establish technical standards. Complementor firms pursue a ‘niche dominator’ strategy that builds a unique domain based on their specialized expertise. Their sources of competitive advantage are also distinct: leaders capitalize on ‘scale and network effects’, while complementors leverage ‘specialization and interdependence’. The study contributes by reframing sustainability as an embedded value within ecosystem dynamics and by providing a relational framework that highlights the interplay of leaders, complementors, and users. Practical implications suggest resilient models of collaboration for firms and policy makers, while theoretical contributions call for longitudinal and empirical research to refine and extend the theory of sustainable technological ecosystems.
