Abstract
Confidentiality and Privacy remain cornerstones of social work practice. Yet while social workers might like to assure their patients or clients that whatever is disclosed will remain secret, and patients or clients may want that assurance before freely disclosing highly personal information, the reality is that assurances may not be possible. Sound social work practice often necessitates supervision, consultation, and peer review of cases, making, total secrecy impossible. Careful documentation in care records, often necessary for decision making, consultation, record review, and protection from possible future litigation, results in a written record, which at a later time can become partially or totally accessible. Nonetheless, the social worker must operate within these mandates and constraints and where appropriate, explain them to clients. Why certain information is confidential and private, why other information is not, and why even confidential and private information may be never totally confidential or private are issues, which professionals and clients must struggle with frequently. This paper is an attempt to present the realities to the social work professional and student, including the patterns, complexities, and seeming in consistencies. To accomplish this end, choices had to be made between what is necessary or more important and what is not necessary or less important.
