발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니는 자녀의 도전적 행동으로 인해 피로감을 느끼기 쉽다. 이로 인해 역기능적 대처로 이어질 수 있으며, 이는 우울과 같은 정신건강에도 영향을 미친다. 본 연구의 목적은 발달장애 자녀의 도전적 행동이 어머니의 우울에 미치는 영향을 파악하고 피로감과 역기능적 대처 각각의 매개효과와 피로감이 역기능적 대처에 선행하는 직렬매개효과를 검증하는 것이다. 본 연구의 대상은 서울, 경기(성남, 부천, 수원, 고양, 포천 등), 인천 지역의 복지기관에서 생애주기별 발달장애 자녀를 둔 부모 400명 중 양육을 주로 담당하는 어머니 335명이다. 분석 결과, 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니의 피로감은 자녀의 도전적 행동과 어머니의 우울을 매개하는 것으로 나타났으며, 어머니의 피로감과 역기능적 대처가 자녀의 도전적 행동과 어머니의 우울을 직렬매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니의 정신건강 지원에 있어 어머니의 피로감을 완화시키는 것이 가장 중요하며 선행되어야 함을 보여준다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니가 자녀의 도전적 행동을 이해하고 예방할 수 있도록 돕는 방안과 어머니의 피로감을 완화시켜 줄 수 있는 개입 방안을 제언하였다.
Abstract
Mothers of children with developmental disabilities often experience significant fatigue due to their children's challenging behaviors, which can lead to maladaptive coping and depressive symptoms. This study examined the effects of children's challenging behaviors on maternal depression, focusing on the mediating roles of maternal fatigue and maladaptive coping, as well as their serial mediation. The participants were 335 primary caregiver mothers of children with developmental disabilities from welfare institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. Structural equation modeling revealed that maternal fatigue mediated the relationship between children's challenging behaviors and maternal depression, and both fatigue and maladaptive coping had a serial mediation effect. These results highlight the need for interventions to alleviate maternal fatigue as a priority in supporting the mental health of mothers raising children with developmental disabilities.
