본 연구의 목적은 국내 기독교인 대학생과 대학원생을 대상으로 Fowler의 신앙발달이론을 적용하여 신앙발달수준을 살펴보고 이론의 문화적 타당성을 탐색하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 대학생 및 대학원생 중 기독교인 109명을 대상으로 Fowler 이론에 기초한 신앙발달검사를 실시하였다. 그리고 발달단계의 구분 및 적용 타당성에 대해 교차 검토를 하기 위해 이미 국내에 적용되어 이론적 타당성이 확보된 Erikson의 심리사회발달척도를 함께 실시하였다. 수집된 자료에 대하여 실시한 주요 분석은 다음과 같다. 우선, 대학생 및 대학원생들의 (신앙발달에 속할 것으로 제안된) 단계별 분포(3, 4, 5 단계)에 대하여 기술 분석을 실시하였다. 둘째, 성별에 따른 신앙발달차이 및 심리사회적 발달 차이를 분석하였다. 셋째, Fowler 이론에서 제안한 발달수준을 기준으로 하여 연령별 분포를 살펴보기 위해 기술분석을 실시하였으며, 연령 간 분포의 차이를 살펴보기 위해 일원분산분석을 실시하였다. 넷째, 신앙발달에 따른 심리사회적 발달 단계 간 차이를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구대상자 중 72%가 Fowler의 신앙발달단계 중 5단계(결합적 신앙)에 속하였다. 22%는 3단계 (종합적-인습적 신앙), 그리고 가장 적은 수인 9.2%가 4단계(개별적-반성적 신앙)에 속하였다. 둘째, 성별에 따른 신앙발달단계 간 차이는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 신앙발달단계와 나이 간에는 유의한 상관을 보이지 않았다. 또한 연령대는 각 신앙발달단계마다 골고루 분포된 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 심리사회발달단계에서 심리사회발달자원은 단계별로 남녀 간에 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으나, 심리사회발달과제의 경우는 남녀 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 그리고 연령과 전체적 심리사회발달의 연관성을 보았을 때 연령이 증가할수록 심리사회발달 점수가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 신앙발달에 따라 심리사회적 발달 단계 간의 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 본 연구 결과 신앙발달단계 구분의 경우, Fowler가 제안한 내용과 국내 대학생 및 대학원들에게 적용된 경우 간에 단계별 분포가 상이한 것으로 나타났다. 성차 및 연령에 따른 상관성에도 차이가 있는 것으로 나타남으로써 이론의 적용상 문화적 차이를 고려할 필요성이 있음을 시사하였다.
Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the application of Fowler's theory of faith development and validity of the theory in the light of cultural differences. In order to examine the distinction of each stage and theoretical validity of Fowler's theory the current study administered a measure based on Fowler's theory, Faith Development Assessment on 109 undergraduate and graduate students. Moreover, Measure of Psychosocial Development, which is based on Erikson's theory of psychosocial development and is already validated, was administered for cross -examination of the distinction of developmental stages and applicability of theory of faith development. The collected data was analyzed in four stages. Firstly, descriptive analyses were performed in regards to the faith development (Stages 3, 4, and 5). Secondly, Chi-square analysis was performed to examine any difference between male and female participants in regards to faith development. Thirdly, Fowler's proposition regards to relationship between age and faith development was tested using ANOVA. Finally, the relationship between psychosocial development and faith development was examined using ANOVA and Chi-square analysis. The results of the analysis are as follow. Firstly, 72% of the participants belonged to Stage 5 (Conjunctive Faith), 22% to Stage 3 (Synthetic-Conventional faith), and 9.2% to Stage 4 (Individual-Reflective faith). Secondly, there was no significant differences in faith development between male and female participants. Thirdly, there was no significant relationship between age and faith developmental stage. In conclusion, the distribution of faith developmental stages among Korean undergraduate and graduate students were different from that proposed in Fowler's model, and there was no relationship between faith development and age, or gender. Thus, the study suggests that cultural differences need to be taken into consideration in application of Fowler's theory.
