본 연구는 한국인의 행복을 보다 심층적으로 이해하기 위해 먼저 연령 및 성별 집단의 행복 차이를 살펴보았고, 다음으로 연령 및 성별 집단에서 자존감 평가영역별 중요도와 만족도가 행복에 미치는 상대적인 영향력을 비교하였다. 연구대상은 인구통계학적 특성을 고려하여 제주도를 제외하고 전국적으로 표집된 남성 366명과 여성 360명이었다. 연구결과 첫째, 연령 및 성별 집단에서 행복점수는 유의한 차이가 없었다. 둘째, 각 집단별로 행복에 영향을 미치는 자존감 평가영역별 중요도와 만족도를 살펴보면, 가족, 긍정적인 성품, 대인관계 영역에서의 자존감이 행복에 유의한 영향을 미친 반면, 객관적․사회적 능력 영역은 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 특히 여성 집단의 경우 모든 연령대에서 ‘가족’ 영역에 대한 만족도가 행복에 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 결과는 연령이나 성과 같은 인구통계학적 변인보다는 가족, 긍정적 성품과 같은 개인심리적, 관계적 변인이 개인의 행복에 더 중요한 영향을 미치고 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
The overall purpose of the current study was to take an in-depth look on Koreans’ happiness. With a sample of Korean adults collected through stratified sampling, we examined (a) if the Happiness Index scores differ by age and gender groups, and (b) how the Importance and Satisfaction indices of self-esteem appraisal in four domains (Social/Objective Ability, Positive Characters, Interpersonal Relationships, and Family) affect happiness across age and gender groups. Seven hundred and twenty six adults (366 men and 360 women) participated in this study. The study results showed that: (a) happiness scores did not differ by age and gender groups, (b) the Importance and Satisfaction indices of self-esteem appraisal in three life domains (Family, Positive Characters, and Interpersonal Relationships) were significant predictors of happiness scores. The Importance and Satisfaction indices of the Social/Objective Ability domain failed to predict happiness scores. Of special note is that for women, the Satisfaction index in the Family domain significantly affected happiness across all the age groups. These results suggest that intra- and/or interpersonal variables such as family and positive characters play more important roles in happiness than demographic variables such as age and gender.
