이 연구는 노인(60세 이상～79세 이하)을 대상으로 하여 자기존중감과 우울의 상호순환적 종단관계를 알아보았다. 연구 자료는 한국복지패널의 1～4차년도 자료를 이용하였다. 한국복지패널의 자기존중감 척도를 요인분석한 결과 자기존중감 척도는 긍정적 자기존중감과 부정적 자기존중감의 2요인 구조를 보여, 이 연구는 두 측면의 자기존중감이 우울과 어떤 인과적 관계를 갖는지 알아보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 이전 시점의 긍정적 자기존중감과 부정적 자기존중감 둘 모두 다음 시점의 우울에 대하여 유의한 교차지연효과를 보였다. 둘째, 이전 시점의 우울은 다음 시점의 긍정적 자기존중감과 부정적 자기존중감 모두에 대하여 유의한 교차지연효과를 보였다. 자기존중감의 우울에 대한 효과에 비해 우울의 자기존중감에 대한 효과 크기가 상대적으로 컸다. 이 연구의 결과들은 궁극적으로 자기존중감과 우울 사이의 종단적 관계에서 상호순환적 효과 모델을 지지하였다. 마지막으로 이 연구의 의의, 상담에 대한 시사점, 추후 연구에 대한 제언을 하였다.
Abstract
This study examined the validity of the longitudinal reciprocal effects model between self-esteem and depression in the Korean elderly(aged 60 to 79 years). It used the data that were collected from the 1st to the 4th year by Korean Welfare Panel Study(KWPS). The previous research showed there were 2 factors in the self-esteem scale: positive self-esteem and negative self-esteem. So, the present study examined a causal relationship between the self-esteem(positive and negative) and depression. The major results of this study were as follows: The elderly’s previous positive and negative self-esteem predicted subsequent depression, over and above the effect of previous depression on subsequent depression. The previous depression meaningfully predicted subsequent positive and negative self-esteem, over and above the effect of previous self-esteem on subsequent self-esteem. The results of the present study supported the longitudinal reciprocal effects model about the relationship between self-esteem and depression. Based on the findings, the implications of this study and suggestions for counseling and for future research were discussed.
