Abstract

The purpose of the this study was to examine the role of hostile attribution of intent on the relationship between pathological narcissism and aggression in middle and high school students. For this purpose, pathological narcissism, internalized shame, hostile intent attribution, and aggression were measured and analyzed using SPSS Macro for 420 middle and high school students. The results of this study are as follows: First, hostile attribution of intent mediated the association between pathological narcissism and aggression. Second, internalized shame moderated the relationship between pathological narcissism and hostile intent attribution, that is, pathological narcissism predicted hostile intent attribution only when internalized shame was high. Third, a moderated mediating effect was supported, which means, when internalized shame was high, people with pathological narcissism tended to attribute hostile intent to others and thus we re aggressive, whereas when internalized shame was low, people with pathological narcissism reported lower aggression because they were less likely to make hostile attributions about to others. Based on these findings, contribution and limitations of this study as well as clinical implications were discussed.
