Abstract
This study investigated psychological pathways in which anxious and avoidant adult attachments predict subjective well-being through emotional reactivity and cut-off. A total of 306 participants, most of whom were adult workers in Seoul or Kyeonggi-Do, answered questionnaires either off-line or on-line. The results of data analysis are as follows: First, anxious attachment predicted subjective well-being not only directly but also through emotional cut-off. Second, avoidant attachment predicted subjective well-being through emotional cut-off. These findings indicate that the higher the anxious attachment of seeking for dependent relationship due to fear of rejection in relationship, the lower the subjective life satisfaction. Besides, the higher the anxious attachment, the higher the tendency of emotional cut-off, which in turn lowers subjective well-being. In contrast, the higher the avoidant attachment of feeling uncomfortable with close relationship and being overly independent, the higher the tendency of avoiding and cutting off emotional expression, which in turn lowers subjective life satisfaction. These findings suggest that adult workers who have either more anxious or more avoidant attachment show lower life satisfaction because they tend to use psychological mechanism of avoiding and cutting off emotions in relationship. These findings partially reflect the characteristics of collectivism culture of Korean workplace that does not recommend freely expressing personal feelings and emotions.
