Abstract

The present study is a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of acceptance on socially anxious individuals. 59 college students with high levels of social anxiety were randomly assigned to either the acceptance group or the control group. Valid data from 56 (27 acceptance group; 29 control group) participants was analyzed. The acceptance group watched a video clip which consisted of an explanation of anxiety acceptance and actual practice, while the control group watched a history documentary. After watching the video, participants were asked to perform an impromptu speech while being recorded with a video camera. One of the major outcome variables was ego depletiona variable which can lead to behavioral disruption on a given task; the other was physiological stress responsea physiological measure of anxiety level. Results are as follows: first, the acceptance group showed significantly lower levels of ego depletion. Second, differences between groups in physiological stress response were not statistically significant. These results suggest that acceptance helps maintain concentration on a given task even when feeling anxious by preventing excessive expenditure of self-control resources, and can possibly suggest a durable anxiety-regulating strategy. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
