Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of group members with high working alliances in group counseling and to derive the meaning and essence of those experiences. To select the group members with high high working alliances, data were collected from 266 people who responded the group counseling work alliance scale. After that, in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 group members who had a high-level work alliance who were finally selected through five stages. The collected interview data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenology method. As a result of the study, 97 semantic units, 37 sub-categories, and 15 super-categories were finally derived. In this study, six themes divided from 15 upper categories were presented. The six themes were ‘before group participation’, ‘environmental factors that helped; group members and whole group level, ‘environmental factors that helped: group counselor level’, ‘helpful personal factors’, ‘process of forming work alliances’, ‘performances within the process and outcomes after completion’. Finally, the significance and implications of the main research results, along with limitations, were described.
