진로전환 상담자의 발달 경험에 관한 해석현상학적 분석: 중년남성 상담자를 대상으로

초록

전 생애적 경력 개발이 요구되는 직업 환경과 정신건강에 대한 사회적 조명이 집중되는 분위기 속에서 상담 직종은 진로전환의 관심 분야로 떠오르고 있다. 이에 연구자는 상담자로 진로를 전환한 중년남성의 진로 전환 경험과 그 의미는 어떠한지 탐색하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 현상학적 연구 방법 중에서도 참여자들의 경험을 심층적으로 이해할 수 있는 해석현상학적 분석(IPA: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) 절차에 따라 진행되었으며, 조기퇴직 후 진로를 전환하여 상담자가 된 중년남성 8명을 3회에 걸쳐 심층 인터뷰하여 진로전환 배경과 발달 과정에서 겪은 경험의 의미와 본질을 제시하였다. 연구 결과, 경험의 주제는「존재감 상실의 시간」,「상담자로의 입문」,「진로 장벽에 부딪힘」,「정체성 충돌」,「역할 혼란 속 난항」,「은폐된 욕구는 성장의 동력」,「상담자 정체성으로의 이행」,「온전한 나를 만남」,「끝나지 않는 항해」로 나타났다. 중년기 조기퇴직이라는 위기 앞에서 성찰적 인식전환을 통해 상담자로 입문한 참여자들은 진로 장벽과 역할 혼란에 부딪히며 침체기를 맞이하지만, 지속적인 상담자 교육과 수련 과정을 통해 전문성이 강화되고, 경험이 쌓이며 돌봄과 양육, 정서적인 관계가 중심이 되는 상담자의 정체성이 체화되며 직업적 발달과 개인적 발달을 보이고 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 중년남성의 상담자로의 진로전환 경험의 의미를 논의하였으며 연구의 의의와 제한점을 제시하였다.

Abstract

With the occupational environment requiring lifelong career development and the social spotlight on mental health, the counseling profession is emerging as a field of interest for career transition. Accordingly, the researcher sought to explore the career transition experiences and meaning of middle-aged men who changed their careers to become counselors. This study was conducted according to the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) procedure, which allows for an in-depth understanding of the participants' experiences, among phenomenological research methods. Eight middle-aged men who changed careers after early retirement and became counselors were interviewed. 3 in-depth interviews were conducted to present the meaning and essence of the experiences experienced during the background of career change and development process. As a result of the study, the themes of the experience were “Time to lose a sense of existence” “Entering to counselors” “Encountering career barriers” “Iidentity conflict” “Difficulties in role confusion” “Hidden desires is the power for growth” and “Transition to counselor identity” “Meeting the whole self” “Never ending voyage” In the face of the crisis of early retirement in midlife, participants who become counselors through a reflective change in perception, encounter career barriers and role confusion at the beginning and face a downturn. However, through continuous counselor education and training, their expertise is strengthened, their experience as a counselor is accumulated. The identity of the counselor centered on caring, nurturing and emotional relationships was gradually became embodied, showing professional and personal development. Based on the study results, the meaning of middle-aged men’s career transition experience as counselors was discussed, and the significance and limitations of the study were presented.
