Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the mediation effect of fear of self-compassion and emotional clarity in the relationship between counselors’ adult attachment and empathy, and to verify whether the two variables are mediated sequentially. A Survey was conducted on adult attachment, fear of self-compassion, emotional clarity, and empathy for 393 counselors with counseling license or counseling graduate students. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and Mplus 7.4. And the structural model was verified. The study results are as follows. First, the counselors’ attachment anxiety had a significant direct negative effect on empathy, whereas attachment avoidance had no significant direct effect on empathy. Second, the mediating effect of fear of self-compassion was significant in the respective relationships between attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance and empathy. Third, both the relationships between attachment anxiety and empathy and attachment avoidance and empathy were mediated by emotional clarity. Fourth, fear of self-compassion and emotional clarity sequentially mediated the relationships between attachment anxiety and empathy, and attachment avoidance and empathy respectively. Fifth, the two independent samples t-test results showed that the novice counselor group had higher levels of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance than the experienced counselor group, and had relatively lower levels of emotional clarity and empathy, but there was no statistically significant difference in fear of self-compassion. The multi-group analysis showed that there were significant differences between groups, but no significant path differences. Finally, based on the study results, implications and limitations were discussed.
