본 연구의 목적은 숙련상담자가 내담자 자살을 경험한 후 어떠한 경험을 하고 나아가 어떠한 과정을 거처 외상 후 성장에 이르는지 그 과정을 탐구하여 외상 후 성장을 이루게 한 요인 및 외상 후 성장에 대한 구체적인 과정을 설명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 상담 경력 5년 이상이 된 시기에 내담자의 자살을 경험한 후 내담자 자살 사건이 외상 사건이 되었으나 그 후 개인적, 전문적 영역에서 긍정적인 변화가 있었다고 응답한 13명의 숙련상담자를 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하고, 근거이론방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 현상 이해 분석과정에서 149개의 개념, 47개의 하위범주, 16개의 범주가 도출되었다. 범주 간 관계 분석결과, 내담자 자살을 경험한 숙련상담자가 경험하는 중심현상은 ‘고뇌 속 ‘묻기’와 ‘찾기’’로 나타났으며, 외상 후 성장 결과는 ‘끊임없는 해체와 재구성 속에서 성장하고 성숙되어감’으로 나타났다. 내담자 자살을 경험한 숙련상담자가 시간의 흐름에 따라 성장하는 과정을 살펴보면, ‘혼란 단계’, ‘반추 단계’, ‘수용 단계’, ‘나아감 단계’의 4단계로 나타났으며 이 단계들은 전진과 후퇴를 반복하는 순환적인 나선형 구조의 과정으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 내담자 자살이라는 외상 사건의 충격과 혼란 속에서 숙련상담자들의 성장을 촉진하는 다양한 상황적 요건을 규명하여 상담자 소진예방 및 보호에 대한 기관 및 국가차원의 위기관리시스템을 구축하는데 필요한 기초자료를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 크다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain the factors that led to post-traumatic growth and the specific process of post-traumatic growth by exploring what experienced counselors experience after suicide of clients and what process they go through and achieve post-traumatic growth. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 experienced counselors who had experienced a client’s suicide at the time of more than 5 years of counseling experience and responded that although the client’s suicide was a traumatic event, there were positive changes in personal and professional areas afterward and the collected data were analyzed using grounded theory methods. As a result of the study, 149 concepts, 47 subcategories, and 16 categories were derived. As a result of analyzing the relationships between categories, the central phenomena experienced by experienced counselors who experienced client’s suicide were ‘questioning’ and ‘searching’ in agony’, and the result of post-traumatic growth was ‘growing and maturing in endless dismantling and reconstruction’. In the process of experienced counselors who experienced client’s suicide growing over time, there were four stages: ‘Confusion stage’, ‘Rumination stage’, ‘Acceptance stage’, and ‘Advance stage’, and these stages were found to be a cyclical spiral structure process that repeated advance and retreat. It is significant in that the results of this study provide basic data necessary to establish an institutional and national crisis management system for preventing the exhaustion of counselors and protecting counselors by identifying various situational factors that promote the growth of experienced counselors in the shock and confusion of client suicide.
