Abstract

This study investigated the relations between psychological mindedness, COVID-19 stress, Platoon cohesion, and general mental health of Korean military soldiers using multilevel analysis. A total of 37 platoons where barracks professional counselors are available, were selected, and participants were recruited for each platoon. The participants completed an online survey. A two-level multilevel analysis was conducted with the data collected from 467 soldiers using jamovi. As a result of the analysis, we found that level 1 psychological mindedness, level 1 COVID-19 stress, level 1 Platoon cohesion and level 2 Platoon cohesion significantly predicted general mental health. Specifically, the higher the psychological mindedness, the higher the general mental health. The lower the COVID-19 stress, the higher the general mental health. The higher the individual soldier's perception of the Platoon cohesion of his platoon, the higher the general mental health. Also, the higher average level of Platoon cohesion, the higher the general mental health. The results of this study are meaningful in that the study examined the effects of individual psychological factors and external environmental factors on soldiers' mental health. Based on the results of this study, the implications for improving the mental health of soldiers were discussed.
