Abstract
This study investigated the influence of childhood attachment trauma on interpersonal problems among college students and examined the mediating roles of impaired self-system and self-object needs in the relationship between these two variables. A total of 286 Korean college students with experiences of attachment trauma participated in a survey measuring Childhood Attachment Trauma, Impaired Self-system, Self-object Needs, and Interpersonal Problems. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 29.0. The results are as follows. First, childhood attachment trauma did not directly affect interpersonal problems. Second, impaired self-system and self-object needs fully mediated the relationship between childhood attachment trauma and interpersonal problems. Third, a sequential double mediation effect of impaired self-system and self-object needs was identified in the relationship between childhood attachment trauma and interpersonal problems. These findings suggest that childhood attachment trauma may damage the self-system, leading to excessive pathological self-object needs, thereby increasing the likelihood of interpersonal problems during early adulthood. This study is meaningful in that it confirmed the role of impaired self-system and self-object needs as key variables influencing interpersonal problems in the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Finally, the significance and implications of this study for counseling practice and future research directions were discussed.
