Abstract

This study aimed to understand the relationship among mental representations, emotional dysregulation, and interpersonal problems. The TAT, K-DERS, KIIP-SC were administered to 415 undergraduates, and TAT narratives were rated by the SCORS-G. This study designed and verified path models in which the cognitive and emotional aspects of representations affect interpersonal problems by mediating emotional dysregulation. As a result, the cognitive and emotional aspects of representations have an effect on emotional dysregulation, which lead to interpersonal problems. Also, the cognitive aspects of representations were found to directly influence interpersonal problems. The underlying internal processes that organize interpersonal experiences affected emotional dysregulation and interpersonal problems. These results suggest that interventions focused on improving psychological mindedness as well as alleviating difficulties in emotional regulation can effectively lower interpersonal problems. Based on the results, the usefulness and implications of evaluating the intrapsychic processes in the context of interpersonal relationships were addressed in the discussion.
