Abstract
This study aimed to classify call center counselors based on their emotional labor and experiential avoidance and analyze differences in mental health among clusters to provide counseling implications. The study participants were 165 call center counselors residing in a metropolitan area in central South Korea, and the data were collected by conducting a survey to those who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis to identify the demographic characteristics of the participants. A combination of hierarchical and non-hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify participants based on emotional labor and experiential avoidance, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted to explore the characteristics of each cluster. As a result of the cluster analysis, three distinct groups were identified: “Emotionally Stable Type,” “Emotionally Suppressed Type,” and “Emotionally Immersed Type.” One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine differences in mental health among the clusters, and the results indicated that the “Emotionally Stable Type” group exhibited adaptive mental health, whereas the “Emotionally Suppressed Type” and “Emotionally Immersed Type” groups showed significantly negative outcomes in job burnout, somatization, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that suppressing negative emotions or excessively immersing in emotions may temporarily help individuals avoid emotional distress but can have long-term detrimental effects on mental health. This study can be used as foundational data for developing psychological intervention programs aimed at improving the mental health of call center counselors in the future.
