Abstract
This study conducted a case study based on an intensive single-subject quantitative design to examine the effects on vocational interests, career identity, and career adaptability resulting from individual career counseling using two career construction counseling techniques: the Career-O-gram and the Career Construction Interview. Two university students participated in the study; one received three 50-minute sessions using the Career-O-gram, and the other received three sessions using the Career Construction Interview. Vocational interest, career identity, and career adaptability were measured at pretest, posttest (three weeks after the final session), and follow-up (12 weeks after the final session). Additionally, qualitative data including counseling transcripts, activity sheets, and participants' written reflection papers, were analyzed to examine the process of change. Results indicated that the student who received counseling using the Career-O-gram explored and reflected on his career development, thereby forming a sense of career certainty and a flexible career attitude. After counseling, interest consistency and differentiation increased, while interest flexibility decreased. Career identity continuously improved over the 12-weeks, while career adaptability increased temporarily but declined at follow-up. The participant who received counseling using the Career Construction Interview explored her interests and values, reconstructed her career narrative, leading to greater confidence and adaptability. Interest consistency remained stable, and interest differentiation showed a temporary increase before declining. Interest flexibility decreased initially but later recovered. Career identity increased after counseling and remained stable, while career adaptability increased immediately after counseling but declined at follow-up. Based on these findings, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
