Abstract

This paper examines the characteristics of Kim Jong-jik’s(金宗直, 1431–1492) approach to ‘the study of the mind’(心學, Simhak). Kim Jong-jik did not leave behind any systematic writings on Simhak, and specialized research on his Simhak has not been conducted thus far. Therefore, this study aims to explore the Simhak-related content found in his poetry and prose to analyze his tendencies and characteristics in this field. Kim Jong-jik's Simhak follows the framework of Neo-Confucianism, with SoHak(『小學』) serving as a key text. He regarded Gyeong(敬) as the foundation of mind cultivation, using it to discipline the mind. By practicing Hamyang(涵養), the process of preserving and nurturing one's original nature through SoHak, he sought to cultivate his fundamental essence. Such an approach to Simhak was a common academic trend in early Joseon. Kim Jong-jik’s Simhak advanced beyond this conventional approach by setting as its ultimate goal the realization of ‘the unity of Heaven and humanity’(天人合一), as taught in ‘Jung Yong’(『中庸』, The Doctrine of the Mean). He embraced the teaching that humans achieve this unity by following Li(理), incorporating it into his scholarship. His Simhak thus pursued the method of self-cultivation through ‘daily practice, ultimately aiming for the highest state of enlightenment’(下學上達), wherein one ascends through practical, everyday study. Kim Jong Jik's Simhak belongs to the field of 'Self cultivation(修己)'. However, it is connected with 'Governing others(치인)' as well. His engagement in officialdom and governance stemmed from his commitment to self-cultivation, reflecting his belief that personal moral refinement was the foundation for effective rule.
