초록

This study aims to analyze Churchill’s play Vinegar Tom from the perspective of feminist narrative theory. Churchill’s drama breaks away from the tradition of female representation through techniques that break and disrupt the flow of narrative. Vinegar Tom consists of 21 short episodes and 7 songs. The episodes relive the witch hunts of the past, but the songs have a modern voice. As modern times have invaded the past, they criticize the history of oppression and persecution of women and denounce the reality that it continues to influence modern times. Churchill’s narrative interruptive technique prevents the audience from empathizing and also disrupts the audience’s narrativity. Churchill’s technique of disrupting the narrative is arguably the most effective strategy for creating a space for criticism and allowing the audience to explore possibilities for change.
