Real or Fake Argument Based on English Sentence Pattern

It is widely known that while an argument is a necessary element within a sentence, an adjunct is an optional element starting from Onions’ (1904) original theory. Here, after debating various researchers’ opinions against Onions on whether to stick to the existing sentence pattern (five revised frame types: Cho 2014, Suh 2018) or to expand it (seven frame types: Wekker & Haegeman 1991), new concepts such as a real and fake terminology to integrate the split complement and adjunct so far are renewed grammatically. In the same vein, this paper suggests that arguments like N (noun), A (adjective), Ad (adverbial), and PP (prepositional phrase)) definitely affecting the sentence type are regarded as a real argument and arguments not affecting the sentence type are a fake argument. Eventually, in process of identifying which type ranging from Type 1 to Type 5 the certain sentence belongs to structurally, the innate subcategorization property derived from a finite verb, the sentential head is the most important factor in telling a real element from a fake element.
