초록

This article examines the historical paralysis of Irish society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in James Joyce’s early work Dubliners. Many of the characters in the work try to escape the paralyzing stasis of Irish society, but none of them succeed. Joyce continues his criticisms in his novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Stephen Dedalus, the protagonist of the work, identifies the social paralysis at work in Irish institutions such as the family, the Catholic church, and the country itself. Stephen recognizes his calling as an artist and determines that the only way to fulfill this vocation is by leaving Ireland for the continent. This paper posits that exile for Joyce was central to the development of art and was one of the core conditions of possibility for this practice for young intellectuals in early 20th century Irish society.

Abstract

Many of the characters in the work try to escape the paralyzing stasis of Irish society, but none of them succeed. Joyce continues his criticisms in his novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
