초록
This paper aims to elucidate grammatical positions of the primary syntactic elements: N, A and Ad. While N and A exhibit a closely related modification relationship, Ad encompasses a considerably broader range of modification categories. Consequently, the positions of these elements are free and flexible due to their distinct positional properties. Understanding how English L2ers perceive and differentiate these elements through a modification rule is of interest. To address these questions, a survey was conducted with 132 L2ers. Three main findings emerged: firstly, L2ers demonstrate the highest comprehension of N. Secondly, the positioning of Ad is various, given their wider range of modification categories. Thirdly, starting from grammatical understanding through semantics, the positional placement of N, A and Ad is fixed and formulated. SPSS analysis revealed the mean values on four graders showing only slight difference for Ad. The X2 value of all sentences reflects that even 4 sentences indicate the light or intermediate difference. Moreover, t-values comparing majors to non-majors mean moderate or significant difference for A and Ad, with 11 significant t-values observed across all sentences. Hence, prioritizing grammaticality over semantic tips helps L2ers identify N, A and Ad. (Jeonju university)
