Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel, The Buried Giant, deals with the socio-political phenomena of collective memory and memory space. His early works have focused on the issues of collective trauma. The Buried Giant also deals with state power, trauma, and memory manipulation. This article argues that Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant leads us to reassess the interplay between social amnesia and the process of actual mourning. By highlighting the themes of state power, violence, and collective sorrow, I examine the literary implications of Ishiguro’s fantasy novel in how it draws on British history, identity, and social guilt.
