초록
This paper examines D. H. Lawrence’s thinking on sex and love in comparison with that of A. Badiou. The French philosopher urges us to re-invent love which has been reduced to a commodity in the capitalist society, and to transform it into a quest exploring otherness and difference. Lawrence shares Badiou’s idea in that love can lead us away from an obsession with the self, but the two diverge on the issue of sexual relations. While Badiou draws on Lacan's thesis to suggest that sublimated love as a supplement to sexuality can provide ‘the truth-condition,’ for Lawrence, the phenomena in Lacan's thesis are a reflection of the current distortion of sexuality, not an inherent characteristic of sexuality. His belief in the incarnate universe and the humans as sexual beings is based on his stark denial of western idealism. In contrast, Badiou's notions of love and otherness, in spite of his quest to seek the universal through immanent transcendence, ends up having Lacanian structuralistic overtones. Both thinkers have deep concerns about the emasculation of modern men in common, and emphasize the need to restore male creativity. However, the alternative of exclusive male-only relationships lacks realism, so only through a balanced relationship between man and woman can we revitalize men's creative motif as well.
