본 논문의 목적은 조형 예술에 대한 가다머의 철학적 고찰을 그의 그림 이론으로 재구성해서 가다머 미학의 주요 내용으로 제시하는 데 있다. 가다머는 조형 예술에서 진리 경험이 가능하다는 것을 말하기 위해 플라톤의 『국가』에 나오는 상의 존재론을 전도한다. 그리하여 그는 『진리와 방법』에서 상을 거울상, 모상, 그림으로 구별하고, 그림이 다른 상들과 다른 자신만의 고유한 존재가를 갖고 있음을 밝힌다. 그러한 그림을 감상하는 것은 존재자의 본질을 경험하는 것이며, 그것이 바로 예술 작품을 통한 미적 진리의 경험이다. 이러한 경험을 가다머는 초상화의 예를 들어 설명한다. 초상화에는 실제 인물의 평상시 모습에서는 볼 수 없는 그 사람의 본질적 면모가 기회성을 통해 표현되어 있으며, 감상자는 초상화와 무언의 대화를 나눔으로써 한 인물의 참모습을 경험할 수 있다. 가다머는 또한 예술가들을 이상 국가에서 추방한 철학자 플라톤을 인물의 본질을 묘사하는 예술가로 재조명한다. 가다머가 보기에 플라톤의 대화편에는 그의 스승인 소크라테스의 본질적 면모가 묘사되어 있으며, 그런 의미에서 플라톤은 문학적 초상화가다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical considerations on plastic arts as the main content of his aesthetics by reconstructing his theory of picture. Gadamer inverts Plato’s ontology of images to insist that experience of truth is possible in plastic arts. Thus, in Truth and Method, he distinguishes images into mirror images, imitations, and pictures, and argues that pictures have the valence of being. To appreciate a picture is to experience the essence of what is existent, and that is the experience of aesthetic truth in works of art. Gadamer explains this experience using the example of portraits. In portraits, the essential aspect of a person, which cannot be seen in the usual appearance of the individual, is expressed through occationality; The viewer can thus experience the true nature of the person by having a speechless dialogue with the portrait. In Gadamer’s view, Plato’s dialogues depict essential aspects of his teacher Socrates. In that sense, Plato is a literary portraitist.
