아렌트의 탈형이상학적 사유와 자연주의적 해석 가능성

아렌트는 자신의 저작들에서 형이상학적 편견과 오류를 지속적으로 비판하고, 형이상학적 전통을 해체한다. 이 글은 본래 신학과 형이상학에 깊은 관심을 가졌던 그녀가 ‘탈형이상학적 사유’로 이행한 것에 주목하여, 그녀의 ‘탈형이상학적 사유’의 특징을 ‘난간 없는 사유’, ‘반정초주의’, ‘현상적 탐구’, ‘자연주의적 요소’로 정리한다. 하지만 이러한 아렌트 철학이 곧바로 형이상학적 전통과의 단절을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 아렌트의 사유와 개념에는 그녀 자신의 존재론이 잘 드러나는 형이상학적 요소도 여전히 함께 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이 글은 아렌트의 철학이 “형이상학과 탈형이상학 사이”에 있다고 주장한다. 인간은 본래 일반성을 열망하며, 철학의 기본적 성질은 형이상학적이다. 그러나 새로운 시대에는 기존 사변적 전통의 특권적인 형이상학이 아니라 그것을 탈피한 형이상학이 요구된다. 그렇다면 새로운 형이상학은 어떤 모습을 가질까? 이 글에서 그 유형을 네 가지로 제시하고, 듀이의 ‘자연주의적 형이상학’이 새로운 대안이 될 수 있다는 점을 들어, 아렌트 철학의 새로운 해석 가능성을 논의한다. 이 같은 해석의 가능성은 아렌트 철학과 자연주의를 동일시하거나 자연주의적인 해석을 해야 한다고 주장하려는 것이 아니라, ‘실천적 판단’과 ‘의사소통’을 중시하는 두 철학적 입장의 유사성을 바탕으로 우리 시대에 필요한 정치철학적 논의를 더욱 다양하고 풍성하게 하는 데 기여하고자 하는 노력의 일환이다.
Abstract
Arendt consistently criticized metaphysical biases and errors and dismantled metaphysical traditions in various works. What made her maintain her “postmetaphysical thinking” despite her initial deep interest in theology and metaphysics? This study attempts to characterize the nature of Arendt’s “postmetaphysical thinking” in terms of “thinking without a banister,” “anti-foundationalism,” “phenomenal inquiry,” and “naturalist elements.” However, this characterization does not mean a total severance from the metaphysical tradition right away since there remain many apparent metaphysical elements throughout her works. In this paper, I argue that Arendt’s philosophy can be located “between metaphysics and postmetaphysics.” It seems quite natural for human beings to yearn for generality; thus, philosophical thinking tends to become metaphysical in some sense. A new era, however, demands new metaphysics. If not in the traditional speculative sense, then what form will a new metaphysics take? This paper unveils four possibilities and suggests Dewey’s conception of “naturalistic metaphysics” as the most plausible matrix in which Arendt’s wobbling philosophy can be constructively re-interpreted. This attempt is not meant to show that Arendt’s philosophy is or should be interpreted as a form of naturalism but to further enrich the political and philosophical discussions needed in this era by revealing certain affinities among the seemingly disconnected philosophical positions, focusing on the importance of “practical judgment” and “communication”.
