Abstract
This study aims at understanding the history of Catholic church of Chungcheong Province through Catholic chapels in Nosong-ri Dong-myeon Yeongi-gun. Nosong-ri is a village that has received Catholicism for more than 100 years by specific family groups. Specifically, the Kims from Kyungju accepted Catholicism more actively than several other family groups. Because of this reason, study on Nosong-ri will help understanding the interrelationship between Korean traditional village that is composed of families and reception of Catholicism, which is a new idea to them. The Kims from Kyungju has been interested in the acceptance of Catholicism since it spread throughout Nosong-ri after "Byeongin Persecution" in 1866. However, they established the chapel in around 1909, when the parish church was built in Gongju. The number of faithful believers at the chapel in Nosong-ri decreased drastically after Japanese colonial period but after the Independence it started to increase. This aspect indicates that there is a close relationship between the social change and the situation of the chapel. It is attentive that the Kims from Kyungju shows various religious changes from Confucianism, Donghak (Korean traditional religion), Catholicism and they even accepts Christianity. It is also important that, the Kims from Kyungju is interested in writing the history of chapels, which is their own history of religion.
