Abstract

The purpose of the thesis is to figure out the Joseon Dynasty’s previously unnoticed exchange with Iki Island by examining their exchange in the early Joseon period by time period, by persons involved in the exchange, and by goods traded. My compiling and analysis of the records on the exchange with Iki Island as found in Joseon wangjo sillok (The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty) has identified the following characteristics. There were total 610 instances of exchange and 68 persons involved in the exchange with Iki Island in the early Joseon period. The persons involved in the exchange with Iki Island were the most active during the reign of King Seongjong, followed by King Sejo, King Sejong, and King Danjong. The persons involved in the exchange with Iki Island can be categorized into five groups. First group is of jechusa (諸酋使) such as jijwa (志佐), jwaji (佐志), hoja (呼子), apta (鴨打), and Yeomjinryu (鹽津留), described in Haedongjegukki as rulers who divided Iki Island. The second group includes daikwan (代官) of Iki Island, such as jingungssi 眞弓氏, who was the daikan of yudaji kyo (唯多只郷) in Iki Island that was governed by Jijwassi (志佐氏), and Moksanssi (牧山氏), who was the daikan of sogan kyo (小于郷) in Iki Island that was governed by Hojassi (呼子氏). The third group is of those persons involved in the exchange at Buddhist temples, engaged in the exchange as head monk or an ordinary monk at such temples as Shorinin (松林院) and Kanonji (觀音寺). The fourth group is of those sujikin (受職人) who received government posts from the Joseon Dynasty such as oesajeong (倭司正), oehogun (倭護軍), and manho (萬戶). And the fifth group is of those people who were related to the early-mentioned groups of people involved in the exchange or those involved in the exchange for whom the place names in Iki Iiland were listed. Their tributary items are broadly categorized into medicinal herbs, dyes, minerals, animals, craft items etc. In addition to the Japanese minerals such as sulfur, products from the south sea such as dyes and medicinal ingredients were available in abundance. In return to the tributary items delivered by the persons from Iki Island who engaged in the exchange, the Joseon Dynasty presented such items as clothes, food, animals, and Buddhist items. As Iki Island stood at the gateway for the traffic from Joseon to Japan and was perceived as the stronghold of the waegu ( ‘Japanese raiders’), Joseon had to ask the influential people in Iki Island to guard the Korean diplomatic missions through their journey. Thus, goods were delivered to the local magnates of Iki Island to request their protection for the mission. This is how the exchange with Iki Island proceeded in the early Joseon period by time period, by persons involved in the exchange, and by goods traded. Further studies on the exchange with other parts of Japan such as Goto (五島), Tsushima (對馬島), and Kyushu (九州) will bring further help in identifying the characteristics of the Joseon Dynasty’s exchange with different parts of Japan in the early Joseon period
