Abstract
Built in 1937, the Daejeon Public Hall was the last public hall built in colonial Joseon during the Japanese colonial period and the only existing public hall. The construction of a public hall in Daejeon began to be discussed in the 1910s as a facility for the social and friendly gatherings of the Japanese residents of Korea. However, when the nationalist fervor following the March 1st Movement led to a nationwide boom in the construction of public halls, the construction of the Daejeon Public Hall was left as an unresolved local issue without much response. The construction of the Daejeon Public Hall emerged as a pressing issue in the region when Daejeon successfully relocated the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Office and was promoted to a city in the early to mid-1930s. During this period, the construction of the Daejeon Public Hall took on a special meaning in the discourse on building a ‘cultural city’ that was being discussed by local leaders who were concerned about sustainable development. And the construction was completed within the ‘Daejeon Urban Area Plan’ established at the same time. However, shortly after its completion, the city’s financial situation deteriorated under the long wartime mobilization system leading to the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War, and the operation of the Daejeon Public Hall did not show the expected vitality. In the end, with the completion of the construction of the Daejeon Public Hall, the momentum for the construction of Daejeon as a cultural city that sought to achieve self-sufficiency as a modern city also lost its momentum.
