Abstract
During the Edo period, there existed a Joseon Koreans village in the area of Naeshirogawa in Satsuma domain (present-day Miyama), where Joseon Koreans captives brought to Japan during the Imjin and Jeongyu Wars settled and lived. Research on the Naeshirogawa region and the lives of Joseon Koreans began in the 1920s, focusing on the settlement process of Joseon Koreans in Naeshirogawa and examining Satsuma domain's policies towards Joseon Koreans, as well as the establishment background and role of Joseon interpreters ('Joseon-tongsa'), and studies on educational materials nurturing these interpreters' Korean language proficiency. In addition, studies on the deeds of Joseon potters who settled in Naeshirogawa, the works they left behind, and the historical description that created the image of Naeshirogawa are being conducted. Building upon this prior research, this paper examines the overall study of settled Joseon Koreans in Naeshirogawa and evaluates the current research status and future directions of studies on Joseon Koreans brought to Japan after the Imjin War. As a result, research on the life of early Joseon potters in Naeshirogawa focused on the settlement process and their relationship with the Satsuma Domain, and it was confirmed that the appearance of Koreans living as foreigners was emphasized. As research progresses on them, Joseon Koreans society has begun to focus on the descendants of those who have continued to inherit the pottery culture, and it has become evident that Joseon Koreans potters taken to Japan have gradually been regarded as symbols who have upheld their national spirit since the Imjin and Jeongyu Wars. However, such perspectives hinder a comprehensive understanding of their history, potentially leading to partial assessments of their lives. Therefore, this paper proposes establishing a framework focusing on 'Japanese pottery culture and Japan-Korea relations', selecting several themes for micro-level analysis of their lives. These themes include examining examples of pottery technology and its influence on Japanese pottery culture, as well as the collection process of Korean Peninsula pottery by Japanese colonists under the influence of such pottery culture. Furthermore, it suggests exploring the relationship between excavations of Korean Peninsula pottery in colonial Korea and those on Japanese islands, along with the excavation purposes pursued by Japanese researchers. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in conducting historical and linguistic research beyond traditional textual interpretation methods, particularly in analyzing Naeshirogawa Korean pottery and its significance. Moreover, it proposes further research into the rituals and culture established by Joseon Koreans captives to maintain their identity, such as the 'Goryeo-byeong(高麗菓子, これがし)' preserved as a specialty of Miyama and the offerings at Tamayama Shrine(玉山神社). Lastly, it suggests examining how these Joseon Koreans captives established relationships and lived beyond their immediate locality.
