Abstract

The basis of diplomacy with Japan for the oppression of Japanese pirates in the late Goryeo Dynasty went through the following changes. It is "The theory of threatening invasion" that warned that if Japanese pirates were not cracked down on, the Goryeo's army would be sent to suppress them when Kim Yong of King Gongmin's 15th (1366) was dispatched. Subsequently, when Na Heung-yu was dispatched in 1375 by King Wu, he expressed a relatively moderate and relaxed expression that Japanese pirates were harmful to the relationship between the two countries. However, in June 1377, the official book delivered by Ahn Gil-sang contained more logical and detailed contents than Na Heung-yu, based on Confucian justification and pragmatism. However, when Shin Hong, who came back to Japan in return for Goryeo's diplomacy with Japan, made a remark by King Wu, who emphasized "promoting friendship with neighboring countries" and "wiping out Japanese pirates," a major change in the stance of Goryeo's diplomacy with Japan. They recognized the promotion of friendship with neighboring countries, namely Japan, as separate issues, and the promotion of friendship was more important than the removal of Japanese pirates. This change in tone becomes even more evident when Jeong Mong-ju was dispatched in September (1377) of King Wu 3rd year of King Wu's return speech. In the national document Goryeo informed Japan of Goryeo's state secrets by itself. This sudden change in the diplomatic stance of Goryeo was due to Shin Hong's coming to Goryeo and informing the Goryeo court of the specific schedule of military operations to wipe out Japanese pirates. In fact, in August of that year, shortly after Shinhong arrived in Goryeo, Kyushutanndai(九州探題) Imakawa Ryoshun(今川了俊) had been launching a military offensive against the Seiseihu(征西府). When Kikuchi, the home of the Seiseihu, was finally captured in June 1381, Ryoshun's offensive came to an end. However, when Jeong Mong-ju was dispatched, the contents of the Goryeo Kingdom's official document contained not only national secrets but also another important meaning. It was said that if Goryeo surrendered because of Japanese pirates as they failed to properly respond to the military invasion of the Yuan(元) and Ming(明) powers, Goryeo, who surrendered like it had done about a century ago, would aim the spearhead at Japan with them. It was like the theory of 'Goryeo and Japan, two countries = relations intimately interdependent’. The mop-up of Japanese pirates was an urgent prerequisite for this. This is also confirmed in a poem written by Lee Saek high governmaent official, for Jeong Mong-ju, who was heading to Japan. In other words, Lee Saek tells the story of China that both countries ended up being destroyed when the Qin dynasty offered bribes to Wu and asked him to lend them a way to make a big fuss, even though the two small countries, "Wu" and "Geok" in the Spring and Autumn Warring States era, were in a position to rely on each other. "If the Cho(楚) king attacks into the forest to subdue the monkeys, the forest will eventually collapse," quoted by Seol San-hoon (說山訓) of <淮南子>, expressing that if the Ming dynasty invaded Japan to wipe out the Japanese pirates, Japan would eventually collapse. As described above, it was confirmed that the basis of diplomacy with Japan at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty changed to 1. <The theory of threatening invasion> - 2. <The theory of harmful effects of bilateral relations> - 3. <The theory of the role of the state and practical theory based on the Confucian cause> - 4. <Goryeo and Japan, two countries = relations intimately interdependent>, Then, based on the <'Goryeo and Japan, two countries = relations intimately interdependent’>, what is the reason why the Goryeo Dynasty selected Jeong Mong-ju as the Japanese envoy, in other words, what did they think highly of Jeong Mong-ju and chose him as their envoy? And another question of what diplomatic achievements he has achieved was not dealt with due to the paper relationship, which should be a new task given to me in the future.
