파쿼의『신병모집관』에 나타난 명예혁명 후 상속녀의 생존전략: 실비아의 남장과 한계를 중심으로

영국의 명예혁명은 왕권신수설의 결정적인 종식을 나타내고, 이데올로기 지평을 변화시켰다. 이후 혈통이데올로기의 와해가 가시화되고 신흥계급이 중시한 사회계약론, 돈, 도덕성 등이 보다 부각되었다. 그러나 가부장적 위계는 이후에도 영국사회를 지배하는 주요 가치관이었다. 특히 결혼을 통한 가문의 토지재산 상속과 관련될 때, 남성상속자도 계급을 초월한 배우자를 선택하는 것이 쉽지 않았으며, 여성상속자의 경우에는 배우자선택권과 상속재산을 함께 지키는 것이 남성에 비해 더 어려웠다고 할 수 있다. 파쿼는 『신병모집관』의 실비아를 통해 이 문제를 희극적으로 탐구하며, 실비아의 자기 주도적 생존전략을 극화함으로써 가부장적 사회체계 내에서 전통적인 성역할의 변화가 가능한지를 모색하고 있다. 이 극에서 파쿼는 신병모집과정을 통해 기존 지배계급이 가치를 두는 명예가 돈에 의해 좌우되는 것을 희화화하고, 멜린다와 실비아가 상속을 받은 후 워디와 플럼을 배우자로 선택하는 과정을 통해 신흥계급이 가치를 두는 결혼도 돈에 의해 좌우되고 있는 현실을 극화하고 있다. 그러나 재산보다는 그녀 자체를 사랑하는 플럼의 진심을 확인하는 남장 실비아를 통해 파쿼는 돈으로 인해 가치가 손상된 명예나 결혼의 부정적인 면을 희석시키고, 긍정적으로 양자를 수용하는 시각을 드러낸다. 이 극에서 실비아는 남녀 양성적 인물로 제시되지만, ‘음주와 사냥’을 제외한다는 단서를 통해 제한된 의미에서만 당대 여성의 수동적 성역할을 벗어나는 인물임을 알 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 그녀는 배우자선택에서도 상속재산을 지키려면 부친 뜻에 거슬러 사랑을 택할 수 없기 때문에 연인의 진심을 확인하고, 부친의 동의를 얻어야 하는 종속적인 위치를 벗어나지는 못한다. 그러므로 이 극에서 상속녀 실비아는 여전히 가부장적인 사회 내에서 여성의 종속성을 벗어던지지 못한다는 한계를 보여준다. 그녀에게 내재된 근본적인 한계에도 불구하고, 실비아의 생존전략이 성공하는 것은 그녀의 아버지와 연인이 각각 명예혁명 이후 새 시대의 가치를 수용한 남성들이기 때문이다. 아버지인 밸런스는 가부장적인 절대권을 주장하지 않을 뿐 아니라 부녀간에도 상호 동의를 중요시 하는 사회계약론의 틀 안에 있는 인물이며, 연인인 플럼은 도덕적 잠재력을 지녔을 뿐 아니라 개인의 사랑에 토대를 둔 결혼이라는 새로운 시대의 가치를 수용한 남성이다. 파쿼는 극의 마지막을 플럼의 노래로 끝냄으로써 이 극이 실비아가 감행한 남장 전략의 성공보다는 새 시대에 맞는 남성상을 형상화한 플럼의 변화에 방점을 찍는 것처럼 보인다. 이렇게 볼 때 플럼을 결혼으로 이끄는 상속녀 실비아의 전략은 외관상 성공을 거둔 것처럼 보이지만, 본질적으로 가정 내에서 여성의 위치가 종속적인 가부장적 사회의 봉건적 틀을 벗어나지 못한다는 명확한 한계를 담고 있다.
Abstract
The Glorious Revolution signaled the end of divine right kingship and changed the ideological frame. Hierarchy, however, was apparently safe, and birth remained a norm of social classification. Heirs and heiresses could not have a choice in mate selection. Besides, heiresses had to survive in a patriarchal system. Through Silvia in The Recruiting Officer, Farquhar presents the survival strategies of an heiress in post-Revolution English society. Silvia disguises her biological sex and outwits the patriarchal system in order not to lose her inheritance and love. She combines the two actions of the play—enlisting soldiers and getting spouses—by disguising herself as Jack Wilfull. Silvia finally achieves her goals, but she could not successfully gain them if her father, Justice Balance, and her lover, Plume, were not appropriate to the new ideological frame. Farquhar ends the play with Plume’s song, and Silvia’s success is overshadowed by the faithful lover, Plume.
