Abstract
The central characters and their actions in The Physician’s Tale are multiply inflected, and they preclude a unified perspective. Virginius's act cannot be simply understood as one of justice or of honor. Far from being the object of a singular judgment, Virginius is associated with a discontinuous series of figures, such as Apius in this tale, and as Apollo, Arveragus and Walter in other Chaucerian tales, while presenting analogies with such dubious figures as Pygmalion and Jephthah. Similarly, Virginia’s death serves to evoke multiple meanings or perspectives. It lacks the redemptive significance of a holy figure’s, and, in relation to Virginius and his conduct, she is an innocent figure, who is victimized in the name of patriarchal despotism. It is through various narrative techniques that Chaucer suspends Virginia’s death between murder and sublime sacrifice, and Virginius’s act between a sentimental savagery to save face and an act of justice.
