Abstract
The epyllion, a genre that gained brief popularity during the Renaissance, is also known as the minor epic or erotic epic. It centers on the beauty of the body and sensual desire, drawing upon mythological figures and themes of love from the Ovidian tradition, while merging them with Neoplatonic philosophy to form a new poetic mode. Inspired by Neoplatonism, epyllion poets celebrated erotic longing, yet, in order to avoid criticism from the dominant Christian moral tradition, they strategically attributed the pursuit of desire to mythological characters, and they retained the pagan mythological setting. In particular, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, and Thomas Lodge embodied Neoplatonic ideas, each in a distinct way, offering diverse expressions of the epyllion form.
