Abstract

This article proposes to newly think the relationship between scientific technology and children’s literature and media. Today, researchers in general humanities focus on a complex set of senses, such as the auditory sense, the tactile sensation, the sense of taste, and so on, beyond the range of characters and their visibility. However, in the case of children’s literature, there is a tendency to hybridize techniques that are in a state of constant evolution. This aspect of children’s literature is distinctly different from the development of general literature. There have been few studies on how the various techniques employed to reproduce the senses have evolved in the history of children’s literature. For example, a mixed approach comprising the use of texts, illustrations, photographs, and movies stands out in the formation and development of children’s literature. This interdependence between media is well-developed, especially since the 1920s, as a complex media environment was established around that time. It is important to observe the correspondence pattern of the previous text languages and illustrations as well as the tendency to mix them with new technology such as photos and movies. Various genres, such as “children’s song,” “photo novel,” “photo fairy tale,” and “movie novel,” exhibit such phenomena as convergence and transition between the language of the characters and various technical images or sounds. In Chapter 2 , the visualization of print media and the use of auditory elements were examined. Aspects like the children’s song and the children’s picture song were used as the main objects of analysis. In Chapter 3, the acceptance of photography focused on children’s novels was analyzed. A melding of text languages and pictures was mainly dealt with. In Chapter 4, the combination of mechanical montage and mobility in comics was reviewed. Thus, it is confirmed that various senses are restored in children’s literature through a mixture of media. Accordingly, the differing characteristics of general literature and children’s literature can be highlighted with greater clarity. The reproduction of various media and complex senses can be regarded as one of the characteristics of children’s literature that is universal .
