역사동화 작가는 현재의 시점에서 역사적 사건을 재구성함으로써 현재성을 드러내고, 아동독자에게 미래의 방향을 제시한다. 본고에서는 역사동화에 나타나는 ‘우리’ 공동체의 특성에 주목하여 그 현재성을 탐색하고, 어떠한 방향으로 나아가야 하는가를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 김남중의 『첩자가 된 아이』, 한윤섭의 『서찰을 전하는 아이』, 조경숙의 『독립군의 아들, 홍이』를 중심으로, 작가들이 보여주는 공동체에 대한 사유를 분석하고 그 의미를 고찰하였다. 이 작품들의 서사는 기존의 국가와 외세의 격한 대립 가운데에서 생존의 위협에 처한 아동인물을 중심으로 진행된다. 가족의 보살핌조차 제대로 받지 못하는 상황에 처하게 된 중심아동인물들이 ‘나’의 생존에 집중하게 되는 것은 필연적이다. 하지만 아동인물들은 다양한 사건과 공동체를 경험하면서 성장해가고, ‘나’에서 확대된 사유로서의 ‘우리’를 상상하고 공동체의 구성원이 되는 방향으로 나아간다. 중심아동인물이 연대하는 공동체는 숭고한 이념을 느끼게 하면서 동시에 가장 타자적 존재인 아동의 삶이 지속되도록 돕는 공동체이다. 이처럼 작가들이 상상한 ‘우리’의 모습은 구성원 간에 신분, 나이, 성별에 관계없이 서로를 대상화하지 않으며 평등하고 민주적인 방식으로 자유로이 소통하고 연대하는 공동체이다. ‘우리’에는 일방적인 메시지만을 강요하지 않는 탈권위주의적이고 비폭력적인 지도자가 어울린다. 이러한 ‘우리’의 특성은 현재성을 담지한 것으로, 작가들은 과거의 사건을 통해 이를 재구성하고 아동독자에게 전달함으로써 우리의 공동체가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한다. 작가는 지금‧여기에 이미 있는 잠재성으로서의 ‘우리’라는 공동체의 특성을 세밀하게 분석하고 골라내어 구체화하면서, ‘우리’가 아동독자와 함께 미래로 이어지기를 바라는 것이다.
Abstract
In historical fairy tales, writers reconstruct historical events from the current perspective, revealing contemporaneity and suggesting future directions to child readers. The way writers perceive the current state of our society and their perspectives on it hold significant meaning. This paper focuses on examining the characteristics of our community revealed in historical fairy tales to explore their contemporaneity. It also contemplates the direction we should take. To achieve this, three historical fairy tales-Kim, Nam-jung's The Child Who Became a Spy, Han, Yoon-seop's The Child Conveying the Letter, and Jo, Kyung-suk's Hong Yi, Son of the Independence Army-are analyzed. Despite different temporal and spatial backgrounds, these works share a commonality in portraying narratives centered around child characters facing threats to survival amid intense conflicts between the existing nation and external forces. The child characters, deprived of proper family care, inevitably focus on their own survival. However, they undergo growth by experiencing various events and move towards imagining and experiencing the expanded reasoning of 'us' as a community. The community elicits sublime emotions while simultaneously serving as a community that helps sustain the life of the child, the most victimized existence. What writers depict as a community named 'us' is a solidarity that freely communicates in an egalitarian and democratic manner regardless of status, age, or gender, avoiding objectification of each other. A non-authoritarian and non-violent leader who does not impose only one-sided messages is suitable for this 'us'. Such characteristics of 'us' are imbued with contemporaneity, as writers reconstruct past events through them and suggest the direction our community should take by conveying them to child readers. Historical fairy tales is written with the future-oriented time and community of child readers more open to the future than adults. Through carefully analyzing, selecting, and concretizing the characteristics of the community called 'us' as virtuality, the writers want that it will continue into the future with child readers.
