The increasing demand for high-quality image and video services has driven the development of increasinglysophisticated digital image processing algorithms. However, the rising computational complexity of these algorithmspresents notable challenges for efficient hardware realization, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Many real-time image processing applications require hardware solutions that minimize power consumption, silicon area, and latency. This paper proposes a frame-memory-free architecture for spatial domain image filtering, optimized for implementation on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. By eliminating the need forframe buffers, the proposed design achieves significant improvements in resource efficiency (with reductions of3.3× in register usage and 2.8× in LUT usage) and a 1.2× increase in processing throughput. Experimental resultsdemonstrate that the architecture outperforms the equivalent AMD Xilinx IP core in key performance metrics, underscoring its potential for lightweight, high-performance, real-time image processing systems.
