Abstract

Ritual wares were sacred vessels symbolizing religious meaning. Therefore not only the royal court but also private residence purchased and used ritual wares of the highest quality. Probably the original ritual wares might be metallic wares mainly bronze wares with the progress of manufacturing technique of ceramics, ceramic wares had gradually occupied the majority position of ritual vessels instead of metallic wares. A few ceramic wares for religious ceremony produced in the Choseon dynasty are remain today because ceramic wares are fragile. The Koreans buried broken ceramic ware because Korean society did not put the using on broken ritual vessels. Today, however, some survivals of ceramic ritual wares are brightly evaluated by its artistic value. The main focuses of this paper are the examination of the meanings and types of traditional religious ceremonies and study of the names, forms, and usage of ceramic wares for religious during the Choseon dynasty. The writer investigated various classical literatures and ceramic remains in the major museums. Unfortunately classical literatures including the Annals of the Choseon dynasty do not have concrete description or design about ceramic wares of ritual vessels but mention plenty of records about the examination of animal sacrifices and ceramic wares for religious ceremonies. Though there are not many ceramic ritual wares left now, most of them have strong symbolic meaning and Koreanistic form of moulding. Korean ceramist had produced ceramic ritual wares which attempted free transformation since early Choseon dynasty. This fact suggests that ceramists tried to metamorphism of realistic object several centuries earlier than the Western artists.
