Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the types and characteristics of dancers’ occupational identity by examining their subjective perceptions. methods: In order to explore dancers’ perceptions of occupational identity in depth, this study applied Q methodology, which allows for the objective measurement of subjective perspectives. A total of 48 Q-samples and 46 P-samples were selected, and the data were analyzed using the QUANL program. Result: The dancers’ occupational identity was classified into five distinct types: Type 1 demonstrated a strong sense of mission as a dancer. Type 2 emphasized social recognition linked to job satisfaction and achievement. Type 3 aimed to validate their career through professional competence. Type 4 viewed dance as central to life, prioritizing inner fulfillment over external rewards. Type 5 saw dance as both a rare, specialized profession and a means of livelihood. Across all types, dancers agreed with statements like ‘Dance is what I love the most’ and ‘Dance is what I do best,’ while disagreeing with ‘Technical ability depends on space’ and ‘Dancers are highly recognized in society.’ Statements such as ‘Dance is a means of livelihood’ and ‘I continue dancing because of the time and effort I’ve already invested’ varied by type. Conclusion: It was found that dancers do not remain solely in the role of artists but actively construct various forms of occupational identity.
