1910년대에 일본에서 도예를 시작하여 1920년에 영국으로 귀국한 이후에 본격적인 도예가로 활동을 시작한 버나드 리치(Bernard Leach)는 20세기 현대도예의 출발점에 서있는 작가라고 할 수 있다.본 논문은 리치가 영국에서 도예활동을 시작한 1920년에서 일본 재방문 직전인1933년까지를 시간적 범위로 하여 그가 설립한 제도소(製陶所)인 ‘리치포테리(Leach Pottery)’를 중심으로 한 그의 활동과 작품의 경향을 고찰하였다. 도예가 하마다 쇼지(浜田庄司)를 동행하여 영국 세인트아이브스(St.Ives)에 귀국한 리치는 유럽 최초의 동양식 가마(登窯)를 짓고 활동을 시작하였다.이들은 문화 환경과 재료구입 등이 척박한 벽지에서 기술적인 난관으로 시행착오와 실패가 잦았다.이 시기의 리치 작품은 주로 슬립웨어와 같은 영국적 전통의 저화도 '도기(Earthenware)'와 중국과 조선의 도자에서 영향 받은 고화도의 '석기(Stoneware)'였다.리치는 런던에서 작품발표를 지속했으나 일부 수집가 등에게만 팔릴 뿐 이렇다 할 도예 애호층이 엷은 당시 영국의 현실에 낙담하기도 했다.일본에서의 리치 작품은 호평이었지만 이 시기에 지속된 재정적 곤경으로 늘 어려움이 컸다. 그러나 ‘리치포테리’에서의 수련을 원하는 젊은 도예지망생들이 이어졌고 이들은 훗날 활발한 활동으로 서구에 리치의 영향을 현대도예계에 파급시켜갔다.한편 리치는 동서양의 문화적 결합이라는 사상적 기반을 가지고 지적으로 각성된 개인도예가(Artist-Potter)혹은 미술가적 공예가(Artist-Craftsman)로서의 입장을 견지했고 그러한 활동이 현대도예에 ‘studiopottery’의 개념을 낳게 되었다. 1920년~30년대 초반까지 시행착오와 경제적 곤경이 컸던 리치는 독지가 에름허스트(Elrmhirst)부부가 세운 지역재생의 교육기관이라 할 '다팅턴 홀(Dartington Hall)'에의 참여와 지원을 배경으로 1934년에 자신의 사상과 예술에의 도움을 구하기 위해 일본 재방문 길에 오르게 된다
Abstract
BernardLeachstartedpotteryinJapaninthe1910sandreturnedtoUK inthe1920s.Since then,he started hisfull-fledged activitiesasa artistpotterand now isstanding on a starting pointofthe20th-century’smodernpottery.Thispaperaimstoinvestigatehisactivitiesandthe trend ofhisworksfocusing on ‘Leach Pottery’he established from 1920when he started his activitiesasapotterinUK till1933whenherevisitedJapan. AccompaniedbypotterShojiHamada,hereturnedtoSt.IvesinUK andbuiltanorientalstyle kilnforthefirsttimeinEurope.Theyunderwentalotoftrialsanderrorsduetothedifficulties inaremoteplacesuchasadifferentcultureandantheunavailabilityofmaterials.Hisworksin thisperiod include:traditionalEnglish low temperate ‘earthenware’such asslipware;and high temperature‘stoneware’influencedbythe potteryin China andKorea.B.Leachcontinuedthe exhibition ofhis works, yet his works were sold only to some collectors. So he was disappointed with the thin layerofthe pottery-loving public in England.His works were well receivedinJapan,yetheunderwentfinancialdifficultiesinthisperiodoftime. Howeverthe procession ofyoung would-be potters continued to learn atLeach Potteryand theyextendedtheinfluenceofLeachintheWest.MeanwhileLeachheldontohisstatusasa intellectually enlightened artist-potterorartist-craftsman on the basis ofhis ideal:the cultural integration between the Eastand the Westand his such activities produced ‘Studio Pottery’conceptinthemodernpottery. Having undergone trialsand errorsand financialdifficultiesfrom 1920tillthe early1930s,he revisitedJapantoseekhelpstohisidealandartin1934thankstothesupportbyDartington Hall,an educationalinstitution forthe regionalrehabilitation established byhisbenefactorsMr. andMrs.Elrmhirst.
