초록
This paper examines the nature of Japanese Sogo Shoshas, which are unique big trading conglomerates but not well known in Western countries. They not only have played an important role in the process of the Keiretsu groups’ development with a variety of business functions such as transaction intermediation, financing, distribution, project organizing, and information gathering, but also contributed to the development of national economic growth since their foundation. It, therefore, investigates several of their features, such as history, major functions, their relationship with Keiretsu, and financial performance. As a main purpose of this study, it also examines the rationales for Sogo Shoshas' existence by approaching theoretical view points. Despite the growing significance of Sogo Shoshas in the national economic system and in world commerce, there has been no major study of them with theoretical frameworks. It, therefore, examines their raison d’être by applying four theoretical frameworks: transaction cost economics, economics of scale, international marketing and financial perspective.
