초록
This paper concludes that since the East Asian regionalism has not been pursued in a manner to avoid the spaghetti bowl problem which would potentially endanger the sophisticated production network in the region, a regional level trade arrangement is urgent merely for smooth functioning of already achieved functional economic integration in the region. For the eventual evolution of ASEAN+3 toward a region-wide free trade area, the paper also contends that East Asian countries need primarily to harmonize a set of inconsistent provisions existing in their already concluded bilateral trade agreements. It further supports pursuing regional level monetary and trade arrangements simultaneously, and reverse sequencing starting the Korea- China-Japan investment treaty prior to a tripartite trade arrangement. Subsequently, it maintains that East Asian countries should focus more on the progress of the intra-regionalism in advance to cross-regionalism in East Asia.
