초록

This paper examines the link between how countries are integrated into global value chains (GVCs) and their export performance in value added terms. We first attempt to uncover each country’s mode of integration into the value chains of a number of manufacturing industries, represented by its GVC participation and position indices. Then, using the OECD-WTO Trade in Value Added data of 61 countries and 10 manufacturing industries from 2000 and 2011, we estimate the relationship between a country’s mode of integration into GVCs and its share in world’s total value added at the overall and sectoral levels. We find that the extent to which countries are involved in upstream and downstream activities within GVCs is one of the key determinants of their shares in worlds’ total value added. The effects of a country’s mode of integration into GVCs on its share in world’s total value added are found to be heterogeneous across industries and its level of economic development.
