Abstract
This paper examines the impact of ecommerce on firms’ output per worker by combining a firm-level dataset with a survey that includes information on the first year of firm entry into the ecommerce market. We employ the difference-in-difference estimator with propensity score matching to deal with self-selection bias and find that a firm’s entry into ecommerce has a positive impact on sales per worker. The growth rate of sales per worker of a firm that begins ecommerce is estimated to be higher than that of counterfactual firms in the controlled group, with a statistically significant difference. Ecommerce has a positive effect on firm performance that lasts until the second year after entering the ecommerce market, and this effect is stronger for exporting firms than for domestic ecommerce firms. The main findings are confirmed by the robustness checks, which include placebo test and additional matching algorithm techniques.
