Abstract

This paper attempts to relate Mendelssohn’s string quartet no. 2 and his Zwölf Lieder by analyzing ‘question’ motif, which appears in both pieces. Mendelssohn fused ‘question’ motif, which originated from his Lied Frage, into his string quartet and in final movement’s coda this motif is musically ‘answered.’ However, the same motif in Frage is not answered throughout Zwölf Lieder. The paper focuses on the contradiction, that the ‘question’ motif is answered not by words, but in music, and tries to explicate it by Mendelssohn’s aesthetics, which is also widely represented in his Lieder ohne Worte.
