본 연구는 네덜란드 도예가 거트 랩(Geert Lap)의 작품을 통해 현대도예에 나타난 미니멀리즘의 특성과 성향을 분석하는 데에 목적이 있다. 1960년대 후반, 추상표현주의의 대항이자 모더니즘 형식주의의 극대화로써 주관적인 감정과 내용을 배제하고 최소한의 형태적 표현을 추구하는 미니멀리즘이 등장하였다. 당시 미니멀리즘의 등장은 순수예술계에 커다란 영향을 미쳤지만 1980년대 도자예술은 표현주의적인 전통과 정교한 수공예적 가치의 추구로 인해 미니멀리즘을 주목하지 않았다. 이러한 상황에도 불구하고, 거트 랩은 도예의 재료적 표현이나 우연성을 배제하고 철저한 계획을 통해 공장에서 생산된 듯한 기계적인 작품을 손으로 제작하여 미니멀리즘의 특성을 받아들인 대표적인 도예가로 평가되고 있다. 현대도예의 미니멀리즘은 인격성과 공예적 전통을 추구하는 추상 표현주의에 의해 외면되었지만, 거트 랩은 오히려산업적 표현을 시도하여 수작업을 통해 미니멀리즘의 비인격성을 드러내었다. 또한 공예의 오랜 장식적 전통을 수용하지 않고 매우 단순한 기하학적 형태에 집중함으로써 미니멀리즘의조형성을 나타내는 반(反) 전통적 성향을 보였다. 즉, 거트 랩의 작품은 당시 각광받지 못한 현대 도예의 미니멀리즘을 수용하여 공예의 비(非)전통적 특성을 보여주었고, 반면 사물화 되어가는 현대미술의 미니멀리즘 배경 속에서 그의 작품은 기능성과 손기술을 이용하는 공예성을 내포함으로써 미니멀리즘의 전형적 전개와는 다른 양상을 보였다. 본 연구는 거트 랩의 작품을 통해 1980년대에 새롭게 태동한 현대도예의 미니멀리즘 특성과 가치를 재조명하고 전통적 관점을 넘어 도자예술의 담론을 확장하는데 의의가 있다 하겠다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the characteristics and tendency of minimalism on contemporary ceramic art through the artworks of Dutch ceramist, Geert Lap. In the late of 1960s, Minimalism, which pursues minimum formative expression except for subjective emotion and contents, appeared as a resistance of abstract expressionism and maximization of formalism. About that time, the appearance of minimalism mainly influenced the field of fine art, but there was few attention on the minimalism in the 1980s ceramic art as it sought the exquisite handcraft value and expressionistic tradition. Despite its background, Geert Lap appeared as a typical ceramist who adhered to the characteristics of minimalism through making mechanical artworks by a firm plan with no contingency or material expression of ceramics. The minimalism of contemporary ceramics was disregarded by abstract expressionism that seeks the craft tradition and personality. On the other hand, Geert lap showed impersonality of minimalism through attempting industrial expressions with handwork. In addition, it represented anti-traditional inclination that expresses formativeness of minimalism by concentrating on the very simple geometric form with no decorative tradition. In summary, the art work of Geert Lap showed non-traditional characteristics of craft by accepting minimalism of modern ceramics that was disregarded at that time, and showed the different phenomena with classic development of minimalism as it involved craft characteristic that uses hand skills and function on the background of materialized fine art minimalism. The importance of this paper is on the extension of discourse in ceramic art beyond the traditional view and reinvention of the value and characteristic of contemporary ceramics newly begun in the 1980s.
